Seniors Ministry
Seniors' Bible Study
Sixty to eighty seniors meet on Wednesdays from 10:00 - 11:00 am to sing, share experiences, pray, fellowship, study, and help each other whenever necessary. The Bible study texts alternate between the Gospel/Acts and the Epistles. This year we are studying Acts and Philippians. Study leaders are laymen, pastors, and retired pastors.
Each year the Seniors' Study/Car Group does one or two projects focused on alleviating somone's need. We also encourage and pray for one of Bakerview's missionaries, or missionary couples.
55+ Hour
The Bakerview Seniors' program began in the spring of 1994 when a committee of eleven persons met a number of times to plan an activity for seniors. They agreed to meet in the afternoon of the first Thursday of each month from September to June. The group met for the first time on September 8, 1994, with 110 seniors in attendance.
We meet to visit together and take part in programs put on by various people, including musicians, soloists, singing groups, and artists. We've also enjoyed talks be members of the police department, nurses, missionaries, a psychologist, and travel and life stories by various people. As a group, we travel to Chemainus regularly to watch live dramas and also take part in the Christmas Lights Tour, locally.
The Fellowship Choir
The Fellowship Choir has been an integral part of Bakerview's Seniors' Ministry since the early 1980's. The choir is made up of about fifty singers in their "senior years" who love to sing for personal enjoyment as well as to minister to others.
Choir practices on Tuesday mornings begin with a short devotional, a time of sharing and prayer. This is followed by more than an hour of intensive practice, preparing musical selections for participation in the worship service on the first Sunday of each month or for ministry at Bevan Lodge and the Cottage Hospital on the third Tuesday of each month. Each year, the choir also prepares two concerts for public presentation; one in the spring, and another at Christmas. These have been well attended by people from the church as well as the community.
Almost every year, the choir has also undertaken a tour of ministry, where programs have been presented to churches in four western provinces and Ontario. A number of these tours have included participation in the spring Senior's Conferences at Briercrest Bible College and the Peace River Bible College.
